“Oh, she is so precious,” Addie declared, fawning over the tiny girl bouncing on Lady Philomena’s lap. “I cannot believe she is already two!”
Lady Philomena nodded. “She is a rambunctious little thing, but I cannot imagine my life without her.”
“I understand entirely.” Addie laughed. “Our three can drive me nearly mad, but I would not be complete without them.”
Thomas gazed at his smiling wife and his heart tightened in his chest. He loved to watch her when she was speaking of their family, and especially their children. Her face lit up in a way that made her almost ethereal, and she was so beautiful, he could hardly believe she was real.
“I hear your father has gone to the West Indies,” Finch, who was standing next to him, suddenly said, pulling Thomas’ attention away from his wife.
He nodded. “Yes, he has gone to oversee his business dealings there. I do not imagine he will return anytime soon.”
“That is for the best, I imagine.” Finch shrugged. “One less encounter for you to worry over, yes?”
Thomas chuckled dryly. “Indeed, it seems that more and more people I would rather not encounter are leaving England’s shores.”
“You are speaking of Count Matera, I presume?”
“Indeed.” Thomas grimaced.
“I say good riddance to that one,” Finch grumbled. “Once his deceptions were uncovered, no proper household in London would take him in.”
“It is good he has gone back to Italy where he belongs, then,” Thomas replied.
At that moment, Cyril and Sylvie emerged from the house to join them in the garden, a tea cart in tow. Thomas smiled as he gazed at the two, their own newborn daughter secure in Sylvie’s arms. His own children, Henry and the twins, Elizabeth and Mary, were playing nearby, enjoying the sunshine and warm weather while the adults visited and had their tea.
When Lord Finch stepped away to go to his wife, Addie made her way to Thomas’ side.
“What is going through your mind?” she asked softly, taking his hand in hers.
“So much,” he confessed with a wry grin. “Mostly, though, I am simply amazed at how lucky I am to have you and the children. To have our family and all our happiness. Some days, I think it all a dream that I fear waking from, but then I remember it is all real and I cannot understand how I came to deserve it all.”
Addie smiled at him. “I often have the same thoughts, and I am so grateful for this life we have built together.”
He raised her hand to kiss it, then asked, “Are you ready for tonight? Nervous?”
Releasing a long breath, she nodded. “Yes to both. It has been so long since I performed, but I am excited to get back onto the stage, even if just to sing at a dinner party. I have been missing it so.”
“I know, my love,” he replied. “I have every confidence in the world in you. You are still the most talented, most beautiful opera singer in all of England. Possibly all of Europe!”
She laughed and playfully swatted at his arm. “Now you are being nonsensical. It is only a little performance, and it will likely not be my best one. Still, it will be good to see if I still have a passion for it.”
Thomas grinned. “And I cannot wait to see you owning the room, looking gorgeous and confident. How will I keep my hands off you?”
She giggled and gave him a flirtatious look. “You will have to do your best, my lord. We are not animals who give in to our baser instincts whenever they arise. We must have some restraint.”
“Indeed, wife. You are correct. Such a wise thing for you to say.”
***
“Oh, Thomas! Yes, do not stop. Oh, please, do not stop!”
“Do not fret, my love,” he growled. “I have no intention of stopping.”
In the end, their baser instincts had won out. It was late into the evening, and Addie had finished her incredible performance less than half an hour before. She had been breathtaking and perfect, just as he had believed she would be. Afterward, she had desired to get some air, and so the two had gone walking in the gardens of the estate where the dinner party was held. The moon was full and Thomas had been worked up from watching her performance.
What had started as a bit of playful flirting had quickly turned into a romp against a tree, well out of sight of the manor and other guests. Thomas had Addie pushed up against the trunk, her skirts around her hips and her legs around his waist and he drove into her over and over again. He kissed her to keep her cries of pleasure contained as she reached her peak and came undone in his arms, her release triggering his own.
They stayed wrapped around each other for several long moments afterward before Thomas began to chuckle.
“What is so funny, my lord?” Addie asked with a grin.
He shook his head. “In truth, I was just thinking how it is a wonder we do not have more children. Given how incapable I am of staying away from you, I should think we might have a houseful by now.”
To his surprise, Addie chuckled softly and gave him a knowing look. “Well, it is rather funny you should bring that up…”
He stared at her, dumbfounded.
“No,” he gasped. “Truly?”
“Indeed,” she confirmed with a smile, grabbing his hand to press against her belly. “We are well on our way to that houseful after all.”
Laughing, Thomas wrapped her up in his arms and peppered her face with kisses. He still could not believe his luck in finding this woman. She was perfect. Meant for him in every way.
Together, they would live their life to the fullest, growing deeper in love with each day that passed. Having almost lost out on his happiness with her, he swore he would never take it for granted.
Addie was his heart. She owned his soul. She was his happiness.
And he would never stop fighting to keep her by his side.

This was a most marvelous novel with a very weird kind of plot. I loved the way Thomas got Addie to agree on becoming an Italian opera singer in order to win his hand to Lady Wilomena and give Addie’s sister a means to help her grow financially in order for her to become someone important in her household.
It was a very charming. story with a
bunch of great characters in it.
